As some may know, Chinese government implements very Internet censorship. As a matter of fact, websites like Facebook and twitter are not allowed to log in and this actually stimulate China's version of those famous apps and websites. Let's have a look at several most well-known ones.
1. WEIBO(微博)-TWITTER
Weibo is one of the most popular social media in China. Like twitter, it is a place to share personal opinion but restricted within 140 characteristics. Weibo actually witnessed a lot of famous “events" like "see you in Monday" of Chinese entertainment industry. Now twitter is suffering from decline users and revenue, but Weibo seems doing well in China.
2. Youku (优酷)-- YOUTUBE
Like youtube, Youku is a platform to share videos. However, Youku is more like a warehouse to store videos. By now, it produces self-made TV shows and series like Netflix, but hasn't found a way to foster its own "youkuer". It actually faces fierce competition from other video sharing websites like "aiqiyi" and A/B platforms.
3. JINGDONG( 京东)-AMAZON
TAOBAO(淘宝)-AMAZON
DANGDANG(当当)-AMAZON
In fact, amazon is accessible in China but not as big as in America. It's really tough to say which one is more like amazon. In China, the American authentic amazon is more like a place to buy books as DANGLING. However, in terms of market share, TAOBAO in China is just like Amazon in America. There are actually big difference between taobao and amazon: TAOBAO is just a platform , does not produce own products and has no mature self-owned logistic. In this way, JINGDONG could be the real China's version of Amazon. But who knows.
4. RENREN(人人)- FACEBOOK
The reason I put this at last is that RENREN has already failed in China due to fast development of mobile based WeChat and Weibo. It was actually gain massive popularity among Chinese youth but it also quickly disappeared. Nowadays, new uni students barely know RENREN.
